The book is based on a conference which took place at the new Library of Alexandrina, which was opened in 2002 after a gap of some sixteen centuries following the destruction of the ancient Library of Alexandria. The original library was the world's first international research and lending library, and a seat of learning in the ancient world. The new library aims to carry on the Alexandrian traditions of light and learning, and become a focal point of issues concerning science and society.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina book will be launched by Professor David Lawson in the Library of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, 9 Queen Street, Edinburgh from 6-8pm on Friday 13 February 2004. The book launch will be accompanied by a display about the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and a wine and cheese tasting. Tickets: £10.
